What is El Confidencial?

El Confidencial is a Spanish digital newspaper of general information, specialised in economic, financial and political news. Its target audience is made up of middle-aged professionals. The newspaper offers all its content free of charge on the Internet. As of October 2016, the newspaper declared on its blog that it had consolidated its position as the third most read digital newspaper in Spain.

History

El Confidencial was founded in 2001 as a medium specialising in economic news aimed at a very small niche of readers related to banking and the business world. Its founders were José Antonio Sánchez, who currently holds 40% of the shares, Jesús Cacho and Antonio Casado Alonso.

The newspaper has been growing and incorporating different sections such as Cotizalia (economy and markets), Mundo, Cultura, Teknautas (technology and science), Deportes, Alma Corazón y Vida (society and wellbeing), Vanitatis (social chronicle) and Gentleman (men’s lifestyle).

From being a small group and going through three offices, the newspaper currently has around 200 employees, with its main editorial office in Pozuelo de Alarcón. In addition to the digital edition, it also has a Youtube channel called El Confidencial Televisión.
