Just 12 of 94 Crimes at Anti-AfD Rallies Are Being Investigated as Far-Left Extremism

Protests staged in early July to blockade Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) federal convention in Erfurt left a trail of 94 criminal offenses and nine administrative infractions in just 48 hours. However, according to an official response from Thuringia’s Interior Ministry to an inquiry by AfD lawmaker Ringo Mühlmann—first reported by Apollo News—police have formally categorized only 12 of those offenses as far-left extremism.

The official records highlight the severity of the blockades while confirming that state authorities had made zero arrests at the time the data was compiled.

Assaults on Journalists and Statistical Gaps

Among the most severe incidents was a violent attack on an Apollo News field crew. The reporters were chased for hundreds of meters by a masked mob, tackled to the ground, and repeatedly kicked in the head. The outlet revealed that these assaults were omitted from the political violence registry, despite the Interior Ministry having previously recognized that exact motive in prior correspondence.

Similarly, law enforcement logged a coercion offense involving over 100 suspects without assigning it to any political category, with officials citing the “provisional” nature of the administrative classification.

AfD Condemns Institutional Blind Spots

Lawmaker Ringo Mühlmann sharply criticized the Mayor of Erfurt for describing the weekend as “peaceful” despite the high crime tally. “Anyone calling that peaceful has lost all touch with reality,” Mühlmann argued, warning that failing to log politically motivated violence effectively wipes it from national security reports and normalizes political intimidation.
