Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has welcomed the congratulatory message sent by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez following his victory in the presidential runoff. In his response, the South American leader emphasized the ideological alignment between Brasília and Madrid, describing both governments as “allies in global progressivism” amid shifting international balances.
“Brazil will continue to stand alongside Spain in defending democracy, social justice, multilateralism, and peace,” the Brazilian head of state posted across his official social channels. His remarks echoed the buoyant reaction of Sánchez, who had earlier celebrated Lula’s electoral triumph as the catalyst for “the comeback of global progressivism.”
The diplomatic exchange carries direct domestic political weight in Spain. In his initial statement, Sánchez drew an explicit parallel between the Brazilian election outcome and Spain’s upcoming general election set for November 29: “A great victory for Lula! What happened in Brazil will happen in Spain,” the socialist leader proclaimed, leveraging the Brazilian ballot box to rally the domestic progressive base ahead of the national vote.
