The UK government announced on Tuesday a series of robust security measures following an alert issued by British intelligence regarding a Chinese-linked espionage case targeting members of Parliament. The alert comes after MI5 uncovered a network allegedly seeking to recruit British nationals with access to sensitive information about Parliament and government operations.
Under the new plan, the government will organize security briefings for all political parties and issue updated guidelines for electoral candidates. In addition, rules on political donations will be strengthened through a new elections law aimed at preventing foreign interference. As part of the security overhaul, the government plans to invest £170 million in upgrading technology and encryption systems used by public officials. A further £130 million will be allocated to bolster the resources and capabilities of the Counter-Terrorism Police. These investments reflect growing concerns over foreign attempts to influence UK institutions and critical decision-making processes.
Security Secretary Dan Jarvis stated that these actions are a direct response to “a covert and calculated attempt by China to interfere” in the UK’s sovereign affairs. He stressed that while the UK values its long-standing economic ties with China, the government will act decisively against any attempts to undermine democratic institutions or national security.
