Alarms have been triggered once again in Europe. Romania, a key country in the geopolitical balance of Eastern Europe, is going through an unprecedented episode that highlights the anti-democratic drift of globalist elites. Calin Georgescu, the favorite candidate for the presidential election rerun in May, has been disqualified by the Central Electoral Office on the grounds that his candidacy “does not meet the conditions of legality.”
The Candidate Who Challenged the System
Until a few months ago, the name Georgescu barely resonated outside Romania. However, in November 2024, this 62-year-old politician achieved an unexpected victory in the first round of the presidential election, a result that shook the European elite. His conservative profile, opposition to the globalist agenda, and defense of national sovereignty garnered the enthusiasm of thousands of citizens who saw in him a real alternative to the established power.
But the reaction from the system was immediate. Just days before the second round, the Constitutional Court annulled the election, citing alleged Russian interference based on the activation of 800 TikTok accounts. There was no evidence of electoral fraud or manipulation at the polls, but the mere fact that Russia had been active on social media was enough to justify canceling the democratic process.
Far from weakening Georgescu, this move only strengthened his support. Polls placed him as the undisputed winner of the rerun election in May. However, the Romanian government was not willing to allow this. In late February, the candidate was arrested while on his way to register his candidacy. The accusations: alleged irregularities in the funding of his campaign and spreading false information. He was banned from leaving the country and opening new social media accounts.
Now, the Electoral Office has delivered the final blow. Georgescu has been excluded from the presidential race on the pretext that he “violated the obligation to defend democracy.” His supporters have taken to the streets of Bucharest in protest, leading to clashes with the police.
The Offensive Against Sovereignists in Europe and Thierry Breton’s Warning
Georgescu’s case is not isolated. In Germany, the patriotic party Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in second with 20% of the votes, but the CDU has refused to form a coalition with them, preferring to ally with the Socialists, who suffered their worst electoral result since 1945. In Austria, the Freedom Party won the election in October, but it has been excluded from the government due to a pact between the Populars, the Socialists, and the Liberals.
The message from the globalist elite is clear: the votes of millions of Europeans will be ignored if they do not align with their plans. European Commissioner Thierry Breton warned of this in January when, in a television interview, he stated: “We did it in Romania, and obviously, we will do it in Germany if necessary.”
And all of this may not stop here. On March 31, Marine Le Pen will find out if she can continue her political career or if she will be disqualified by the French state on charges of misappropriating European funds. The leader of the National Rally has already denounced an “intolerable political interference in the democratic process.”
Given this situation, Romania seems to be just a reflection of what is happening across the continent. It is increasingly clear that the globalist elites are willing to ignore the popular will to maintain their control over institutions. Attacks against sovereignist parties in Germany, Austria, and France confirm a pattern: democracy is only valid when it benefits the same people as always.
