Viktor Orbán calls for transatlantic peace coalition to end Ukraine war
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for a “transatlantic peace coalition” led by patriotic forces to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. In a recent campaign rally for the upcoming European Parliament elections on June 9, Orbán accused the European Union of pushing the Western world into armed conflict with Russia.
Speaking to over 10,000 supporters in Budapest, Orbán emphasized the potential role of European sovereignists and U.S Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in resolving the Eastern European conflict between Russia and Ukraine, should Trump win the upcoming November elections. “At the beginning of the year, we were still in the minority; by the end of the year, we could be the majority throughout the Western world,” Orbán stated, as reported by the German news agency dpa.
Orbán criticized the EU as a “war faction” intent on pushing the West into war with Russia. He attributed this drive to Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros, whom he accused of spending “30 years” trying to drag the West into conflict to replace fallen soldiers with migrants.
Urgent call for ceasefire and peace negotiations
The Hungarian leader reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations, warning that a third world war could “destroy” Hungary. Orbán’s stance highlights his consistent opposition to the EU’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and his advocacy for diplomatic solutions.
Orbán’s party, Fidesz, is leading the polls in Hungary ahead of the European Parliament elections. This election is seen as a crucial moment for sovereignist parties across the European Union, with potential significant shifts in the political landscape.
As the election date approaches, Orbán’s rhetoric and campaign efforts focus on portraying Fidesz as the protector of Hungarian interests and a force for peace in a turbulent geopolitical climate. This strategy aims to consolidate support among Hungarian voters and bolster the position of similar parties within the EU.
Viktor Orbán’s call for a transatlantic peace coalition underscores his vision for resolving the Ukraine conflict through diplomatic means and his criticism of the EU’s current strategies. As the European Parliament elections draw near, Orbán’s message resonates with a significant portion of the Hungarian electorate, potentially influencing broader political dynamics within the EU. The outcome of these elections will be crucial in determining the future direction of European policies on war and peace.
