Over 70% of EU citizens ‘likely’ to vote in June elections, new poll shows
Over two-thirds of European Union citizens are inclined to vote in the upcoming European Parliament elections, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey, which sampled over 26,000 individuals across the 27 member states.
This survey, released on a Wednesday morning before the elections scheduled for 6-9 June, shows a 71% likelihood among respondents to participate, marking a 10% increase from the 2019 elections, where voter turnout was 50.66%, reversing a trend of declining voter engagement.
Only 14% of participants expressed a low likelihood of voting, with 13% undecided.
The highest voter engagement is observed in Denmark (87%), the Netherlands (86%), Sweden (81%), Finland (79%), and Germany (78%). Notable increases in voter intent since 2019 are seen in the Czech Republic (from 39% to 58%), Romania (55% to 74%), Austria and Poland (both from 52% to 70%), Cyprus (44% to 60%), and Slovakia (47% to 62%). Bulgaria, however, saw a decrease from 57% in 2019 to 50% in 2024.
Overall, interest in the elections has grown, with 60% of EU citizens expressing interest, an increase of 11 points since spring 2019. Yet, 27% report being not very interested, and 13% not interested at all.
The Eurobarometer also reveals that 53% of respondents consider the elections of high importance, with 36% seeing them as moderately important, and 10% of low importance.
Amidst global tensions, including the conflict involving Ukraine, Iran, Israel, and economic issues with China, 81% of EU citizens believe that the current international context underscores the importance of voting.
Parliament President Roberta Metsola commented on the critical nature of the elections and their potential impact on the EU’s future direction.
Additionally, despite recent scandals, the European Parliament maintains a generally positive image, with 41% of respondents viewing it favorably—an increase of five points from the previous survey. Only 18% view the institution negatively, while 40% are neutral.
