European Parliament Approves New Directive on Due Diligence

The European Parliament has given the green light to the Directive on due diligence, a legislative measure aimed at combating the negative impacts of business activities on human rights and the environment.

The directive, which was approved after intense negotiations with the Council of the European Union, requires companies and their partners throughout the supply chain, from supply to distribution, to take steps to prevent, mitigate, or reduce their negative impact.

The final vote ended with 374 votes in favor, 235 against, and 19 abstentions.

With the approval of this directive, the European Union positions itself at the forefront of implementing laws that not only seek to regulate internal economic activities but also positively influence global business practices, promoting sustainable development that is respectful of human rights and the natural environment.

For the rapporteur of this Directive, Dutch MEP Lara Wolters, “Today’s vote is a milestone for responsible business conduct and a significant advance towards ending the exploitation of people and the planet by companies.”

And she assured that “in the next term of Parliament, we will fight not only for its rapid implementation but also to make the European economy even more sustainable.”
