Far-Left Unrest Hits France Again After Day of Looting and Extreme Vandalism
French police clashed again on Sunday afternoon with protesters in Paris and other major cities—including Toulouse, Lyon, Rennes, and Lille—during rallies organized via social media. The renewed tension came just one day after nationwide mass demonstrations escalated into heavy violence, widespread looting, and extensive damage to businesses and public buildings.
In Paris, the Police Prefecture deployed a specialized quick-intervention unit and set up security checkpoints in response to calls for unauthorized gatherings. Officers used tear gas, launched baton charges, and deployed water cannon trucks near the Place de la République to disperse crowds and arrest individuals involved in the initial skirmishes.
Toll of the Mass Demonstrations
The latest unrest follows Saturday’s massive mobilization, which brought hundreds of thousands of people into the streets. The marches degenerated in several areas into severe clashes involving radical groups, who targeted government buildings, vandalized public property, and looted commercial establishments.
The Interior Ministry estimated nationwide turnout at 550,000 demonstrators (including 110,000 in Paris), whereas organizers put the total figure at over 800,000. Authorities confirmed that more than 2,000 people were arrested nationwide, while around 600 police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters sustained injuries.
Heavy Losses for the Retail Sector
The economic fallout has alarmed business groups. According to initial estimates from the Federation of Commerce and Distribution (FCD), the looting and destruction of approximately 1,500 stores across the country could result in hundreds of millions of euros in financial losses.
