EU Member States adopted on Monday a new aid package of €20 million to support the Mauritanian Army in surveillance and deterrence efforts, as part of the European Peace Mechanism.
With this package, the EU aims to back the Mauritanian Armed Forces’ efforts to promote stability in the Sahel, counter the risk of destabilization, and protect Mauritania’s territorial integrity and sovereignty from both internal and external aggression.
The assistance will be used to equip Mauritanian forces with land surveillance equipment and a second maritime patrol vessel, following an initial vessel provided in 2024, to enhance deterrence and military operations.
In total, the EU has mobilized €47 million in military aid for Mauritania, with this package adding to previous allocations of €12 million in 2022 and €15 million in July of last year.
