EU decides against Mpox border restrictions and mass vaccination strategy
The European Union (EU) has opted against introducing border controls or launching a common vaccination campaign in response to the ongoing mpox outbreak. The decision was reached after a meeting held by the Health Security Committee (HSC) with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Despite rising cases in parts of Africa, including a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), EU health authorities have assessed that the current risk level in Europe does not justify additional restrictive measures against mpox.
The HSC determined that there is no need to update the 2022 guidelines. Those recommend mpox vaccines primarily for high-risk groups. Vulnerable profiles are immunocompromised individuals, and those exposed to the virus through close contact. Expanding the vaccination effort to the general population was ruled out. Health officials believe it would be unnecessary, given the low transmission rates within Europe. The committee emphasized the importance of close coordination and vigilant monitoring across member states. They need to focus on maintaining effective surveillance systems and public awareness campaigns. These measures are less radical than potentially disruptive measures, like border checks.
Response from member states
While the EU collectively decided against new border restrictions, individual member states like Spain are taking extra precautions. Spanish Health Minister Monica García announced that, although no additional border measures are being implemented, authorities will work closely with airports and airlines to ensure travelers receive updated information about mpox risks. Enhanced public health messaging and preparedness planning are expected to be key elements of the EU’s strategy going forward.
The EU’s approach reflects a balance between remaining cautious and avoiding unnecessary disruption. While the WHO has declared the current mpox outbreak a global health emergency, the situation in Europe remains under control. By prioritizing targeted interventions and close coordination, the EU aims to maintain readiness while minimizing the need for widespread restrictions.
