European Parliament opposes cuts to EU programs and aims for an increased budget
In a significant move, the budget committee of the European Parliament has firmly opposed the Council’s proposed cuts to essential EU programs, advocating instead for increased funding in the upcoming 2025 budget. This decision comes as European lawmakers emphasize the importance of programs like Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ amid pressing economic challenges.
During a vote in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted their stance on the Commission’s draft budget, rejecting a €1.52 billion reduction to flagship projects. Victor Negrescu, the lead negotiator from Romania’s S&D party, stated, “We are asking for an increase to key programmes that we consider essential in the current context.” The committee’s position received strong support, passing with 29 votes in favor.
Concerns Over Proposed Cuts
Lawmakers highlighted the negative impact of the proposed cuts for the Parliament, which would particularly affect critical programs. The Council’s suggestions included slashing funding for Horizon Europe by €400 million and Erasmus+ by €294 million. MEP Andrzej Halicki emphasized that the cuts were “unacceptable,” warning they would severely limit funding for essential initiatives, including education and security.
As the EU faces the implications of the NextGenerationEU recovery plan, MEPs argue that prudent budgeting must not come at the expense of vital investments. Halicki stressed the necessity for the EU to support innovation, young farmers, and education through these flagship programs. The Parliament aims for a “people-centered 2025 EU budget” exceeding €200 billion to address various sectors, including health and humanitarian aid.
The European Parliament’s strong stance against budget cuts reflects a commitment to prioritizing key programs that foster innovation, education, and security. As the budget negotiations progress, the focus remains on restoring funding and ensuring that the final budget meets the needs of all EU citizens.
