Kaja Kallas: “The EU welcomes the ceasefire agreement in Gaza”
In an official statement released on Saturday by the European Union’s High Representative, Kaja Kallas, the EU expressed its stance on the recently reached ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
The European Union has today welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which will enable the gradual release of hostages held for more than 15 months and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the region.
The agreement, brokered with the mediation of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, represents a significant step forward that could have positive repercussions across the Middle East. However, experts have noted the limited involvement of the EU in achieving the deal. Among the hostages set to be released are several European citizens, who will finally be reunited with their families.
The EU emphasized in its statement the importance of ensuring full and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid to Gaza, particularly through UN agencies such as UNRWA. Additionally, the EU called for the safe and dignified return of displaced Gazans to their homes.
Condemnation of civilian casualties
The European bloc expressed its deep concern over the high number of civilian casualties, particularly children, since Hamas’ terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023. In this context, the EU reiterated its commitment to achieving lasting peace based on the two-state solution, envisioning Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully and securely.
Support for the Palestinian authority
As part of its commitment, Kaja Kallas announced that the EU will provide support to the Palestinian Authority to address its most urgent needs and advance its reform agenda. The EU will also continue working with Israel and other international partners to reinvigorate the political process.
The EU sees this ceasefire as an opportunity to build momentum for peace and stability in the region, while urging all parties involved to honor their commitments and work toward a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
