Russian nuclear defense chief killed in Moscow bomb attack
The head of Russian nuclear defense chief, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, was killed in a targeted explosion on Tuesday morning in southeast Moscow. Kirillov’s chauffeur was also killed in the blast, which occurred near the residential building entrance on Ryazansky Prospekt at approximately 6:00 AM.
According to preliminary reports, an improvised explosive device (IED) was hidden inside an electric scooter outside the building. The device was remotely detonated, with the perpetrator allegedly monitoring the scene via a building entrance camera. The explosion shattered nearby apartment windows and severely damaged the general’s vehicle.
Ukrainian security services claimed responsibility for the attack, a development first reported by AFP. This assassination marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, targeting a high-ranking military official on Russian soil.
Kirillov’s role in Russian defense and controversial allegations
Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, 54, had been the head of Russia’s RCBZ troops since 2017. He was widely known for his controversial claims regarding alleged U.S. biological weapons programs in Ukraine. In March 2022, Kirillov delivered a high-profile presentation accusing American laboratories in Ukraine of researching biological agents spread by bats and birds. Additionally, he accused Ukraine of provocations involving chemical agents, including claims of plans to deploy a so-called “dirty bomb.”
The fatal incident has sparked an immediate investigation, with authorities opening a criminal case. Security officials remain on high alert, as the explosion indicates both advanced planning and a high degree of operational sophistication.
Implications of the attack
Kirillov’s assassination represents a serious breach of security within Moscow and signals a bold move by Ukrainian forces, as confirmed by their admission of responsibility. This attack could escalate tensions further and prompt retaliatory measures from Russia. Analysts suggest it may also have psychological and strategic implications, targeting Russia’s top military leadership amid ongoing hostilities.
For now, Moscow’s security services are intensifying efforts to track the assailants and prevent similar attacks, as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
