Ukrainian soldiers in Donetsk urge for more NATO weapons amid russian advances
Ukrainian soldiers stationed on the Donetsk frontline have called for urgent NATO-standard weapons to counter Russian offensives. Troops describe the situation as “difficult,” with Russia amassing forces and preparing further attacks in the region.
Frontline challenges in Donetsk
The soldiers highlight the need for NATO-standard howitzers and 155mm shells, essential for long-range defense. These weapons, with a range of up to 60 kilometers, could help Ukrainian forces repel Russian advancements effectively. The soldiers, many of whom have served for three years, remain steadfast despite the challenges.
Commander Anatolii from the 26th Artillery Brigade praised his troops’ resilience. “The youngest is 21 and shows no fear. They are true heroes,” he remarked.
Russian drone strikes escalate civilian suffering
On Wednesday, Russian forces launched drone strikes on Mykolaiv and Sumy, injuring civilians and causing significant damage. In Mykolaiv, the attacks disrupted electricity, heating, and gas supplies, leaving over 100 homes affected.
In Sumy, Shahed drones damaged over 40 buildings, including homes and a production facility. Local authorities deployed rescue teams to address the destruction, temporarily repairing windows and roofs while assessing overall damage.
Global efforts to support Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is meeting world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, seeking support for his country’s defense. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Russia of potential new sanctions if peace negotiations fail, though Moscow’s response remains dismissive.
The war has caused over €146 billion in infrastructure damage. Reconstruction could exceed €466 billion, highlighting the immense toll of the conflict. As the war continues, Ukrainian forces and civilians face mounting challenges, underscoring the urgent need for international support.
