Youtube, the main platform for listening to podcasts in Spain
Spain is joining the global audio revolution with a paradoxical result. In contrast to other European countries, Spanish listeners opt above all for Youtube, a video platform, as the main podcast player, according to the Digital News Report, produced by Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford.
30% of Spanish listeners surveyed say they listen to podcasts via the leading video website. This is followed by Spotify with 26%, iVoox with 19%, Google Podcast, with 13%, media websites and apps, with 12% and, to a lesser extent, Audible and Apple Podcast, with 7%.
The sound scene is significantly different in the two countries analysed by the report. Spotify is the preferred platform in the UK and Germany. In the first country, compared to Spain, BBC Sounds, consumed by three out of every ten listeners, and Apple Podcast, with two out of every ten users, have a notable weight.
In Germany, Youtube is also particularly relevant, occupying second place, with two out of every ten listeners. It is followed by the local platform ARD Audiothek, with 12%.
Spain is one of the countries in the world where most podcasts were consumed last month. Specifically, it is in fourth place, with 41% of users consulted. The list is headed by: Ireland, a country with a strong audio tradition (46%), Spotify’s home country Sweden (44%) and Norway (42%). Spain is four points ahead of the United States, the country that generates the most podcasts.
Monetisation is one of the hottest challenges facing podcasts. According to this study, the level of users in Spain who pay to listen to podcasts and for the Premium version on YouTube is the same as those who pay for media subscriptions and newsletters.
