MEPs suspend German MEP’s assistant for spying for Chinese government
The European Parliament has immediately suspended the assistant of a German MEP who has been arrested in Germany for spying for the Chinese government.
The suspect, identified for Jian G., transmitted sensitive information to the Intelligence services of Xi Jinping’s regime in January. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, he had been working since 2019 for the MEP – who has not yet been identified. Three other arrests in Germany and two more in the United Kingdom are added to the case.
In addition to providing information relating to the European Parliament, Jian G. also provided information relating to Chinese dissidents in Germany. He is scheduled to appear before a judge, who will decide whether to issue a pre-trial detention order pending trial.
In light of this situation, Chinese authorities have called on the international community to stop the “dissemination of false information” about espionage activities carried out for Chinese Intelligence, accusations they have denounced as seeking to “undermine cooperation with Europe.”
“We have seen an increase in this type of information. In fact, everyone has been able to see recently that the so-called Chinese espionage conspiracy theory is not something new to the public opinion. For the past few years, this issue has been being addressed in China and Europe,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
