Residents of various towns on the outskirts of Athens, in Greece’s Attica region, have been issued evacuation notices as a forest fire approaches the Greek capital.
Emergency services sent out alert and evacuation messages just before 5:00 PM local time this Sunday (4:00 PM CET), as reported by the broadcaster Athina 9.84.
The first message urged residents near the Panagias monastery area to move towards Grammatiko. Shortly thereafter, the residents of Vothona, Kalentzi, and Purithi were advised to head to the town of Marathon, located about 42 kilometers from Athens.
Firefighters have deployed ground and aerial resources, with 165 firefighters, nine infantry divisions with 30 ground vehicles, seven airplanes, and five helicopters currently engaged in extinguishing efforts.
