The wildfire that has been raging for over two days in areas north of Athens has claimed its first victim, a 62-year-old woman who died in a building consumed by the flames. Her body was found inside a factory in Vrilissia, on the outskirts of the Greek capital. “I don’t know why she didn’t leave when everyone else did,” the business owner told the ERT network.
The fire, which broke out on Sunday near Lake Marathon, has spread, destroying several homes in its path. The European Union’s monitoring service has estimated that over 10,000 hectares have been burned.
