An NGO Funded by Brussels and Soros Publishes a Report Accusing Fico, Meloni, and Orbán of “Undermining the Rule of Law”
A progressive NGO funded by the European Commission and George Soros’ Open Society Foundations has published a report criticizing European conservative governments while praising globalist leaders aligned with its political vision.
The document, released on Monday, March 17, by the organization Union for Civil Liberties in Europe, attacks Hungary, Slovakia, and Italy, accusing them of “weakening the rule of law.” According to the report, democratic standards in Hungary have fallen so much that the country would not be able to join the European Union if it applied for membership today. In Slovakia, Robert Fico’s government is blamed for “dismantling institutional safeguards,” while Giorgia Meloni’s coalition in Italy is accused of undermining the democratic system.
On the other hand, the report praises Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, presenting his attacks on the opposition as “an initiative to restore democracy.” The contrast between the criticisms and praises reflects a clear ideological bias in the evaluation of European governments.
Although the organization declares on its website that it does not accept funding from government entities, its 2023 annual report reveals that 40% of its funds come from the European Commission, while another 41% is provided by Soros’ Open Society, raising doubts about its independence.
The report is published amid growing tensions between Hungary and Brussels. During a speech on Saturday, March 15, on the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán denounced foreign interference and accused the EU bureaucracy of attempting to restrict national sovereignty. He compared the current situation to the Habsburg domination in the 19th century and assured that his country would resist external pressures. “There is always an empire trying to take away our freedom. Right now, it’s one in Brussels,” he said.
The Hungarian government has become an obstacle to Brussels’ agenda due to its sovereignty-driven policies. It has closed its borders to illegal immigration, promoted traditional values, and adopted a pro-peace stance on the Ukraine conflict, which has generated rejection among European elites.
Orbán also denounced the existence of an influence network operated through external funding, stating that his administration would dismantle the financial mechanism that allows foreign groups to influence judges, journalists, and political activists. The Prime Minister’s statement comes after the USAID scandal in the United States, where it was revealed that the main U.S. aid agency had promoted ideological agendas abroad and interfered in the affairs of countries with governments not aligned with Washington’s liberal vision.
