UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has invited more than a dozen European and European Union (EU) leaders to a summit on Sunday to “galvanize European action” on Ukraine for a “just and lasting peace,” more than three years after the start of the war, unleashed on February 24, 2022 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The prime minister will use the summit to galvanize European action on Ukraine, signaling our collective unwavering support for achieving a just and lasting peace and an enduring settlement that guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty and future security,” a Downing Street spokesman said, as reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph.
The summit will be attended by leaders of countries such as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, as well as others from NATO, whose Secretary General, Mark Rutte, will participate in the meeting, and the EU, whose President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will attend.
Prior to the meeting, Starmer will hold a call with leaders of the Baltic countries and will receive Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski to discuss the war with Russia. Zelenski is also scheduled to attend the extraordinary summit convened by Costa on March 6, where he has indicated that EU leaders will discuss possible security guarantees for Ukraine.
