Keys for the IBEX 35 in the first week of the year
The year, like all previous years, starts on the IBEX 35 with the question of whether or not there will be a ‘January effect’. To reach that conclusion, we have to wait until the end of the month. The market, meanwhile, kicks off the first week of the year on Tuesday with employment data from Spain and Germany, the CPI in Germany, the December manufacturing PMI in the eurozone and the minutes of the last meeting and the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve (Fed), which will mark the investor’s agenda.
Tuesday 2nd will start with the release of December manufacturing PMIs for Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the eurozone, which in their advance reading showed a generalised contraction in manufacturing activity, according to Singular Bank.
A day later, on the 3rd, employment data will be published in Spain and Germany.
On Thursday 4, inflation in France and Germany will be released, as well as composite and services PMI for these two countries, Italy, the eurozone and the UK.
In Spain, the auction of three and five-year Spanish bonds and ten-year government bonds will be published on Thursday.
On Friday the 5th, Italian and euro zone CPI, Spanish consumer confidence, and the IHS S&P Global construction PMI will be released.
The US manufacturing PMI, one of the key indicators for the IBEX 35 this week.
In the US, the manufacturing PMI will be released on Tuesday, followed by the MBA mortgage applications index, the Redbook retail sales index and the manufacturing employment index (ISM) on Wednesday 3, as well as the JOLTS job openings survey.
On the same day, the minutes of the last Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting will be released, at which interest rates were held steady, and a day later, on Thursday, a review of the year will be released.
Thursday will also see the US release of the Challenger Report on job cuts, new jobless claims and reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks.
On the last day of the week, average hourly earnings and average weekly working hours will be released in the US.
In the Asia-Pacific region, China’s Caixin manufacturing PMI for December will be released on Tuesday, followed by services and composite PMI on Thursday.
In Japan, the New Year’s holiday on Monday will be followed by stock market holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday, so the first data of the week will not be released until Thursday, which will be the manufacturing PMI for December, while the services PMI will be released a day later, on Friday.
