London’s Heathrow Airport announced a complete shutdown for the entire day on Friday due to a “significant power outage” resulting from a fire at an electricity substation in Hayes, a town west of the capital.
“Due to a fire at an electricity substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To ensure the safety of our passengers and staff, Heathrow will remain closed until 11:59 PM on March 21,” reads a statement.
Additionally, the airport has recommended that passengers refrain from traveling to the airport and contact their airline for further information, as stated through their profile on social media platform X.
The London Fire Brigade reported that a transformer inside an electricity substation in Hayes, west of London, is on fire. They have deployed around ten units and approximately 70 firefighters who are “fighting the blaze.”
Deputy Commissioner Pat Goulbourne explained that the flames have “caused a power outage affecting a large number of local homes and businesses,” while they are “working closely with partners to minimize disruptions.”
