The Intelligence Committee of the Bundestag has requested the federal government to publish the available findings on the origin of the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement agreed upon with the Parliamentary Control Committee, they expressed that they welcome “the interest in clarifying and the research process itself.”
Olaf Scholz’s Chancellery tasked scientists with examining evidence from the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) related to the claim that the virus originated in a laboratory in the city of Wuhan, central China. According to the German newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the measures are being evaluated through an expert panel in meetings held over the past few months.
The body responsible for overseeing intelligence services has expressed gratitude for the reports released by the media. During the meeting, the Federal Government described the facts somewhat differently than they had been previously presented. However, it was emphasized that the Government should have informed the control committee earlier about the specific hypotheses that the BND was investigating and analyzing regarding the origin of the pandemic.
