The Basques spend the most in bars and restaurants in Spain. On average, they spend up to 1,300 euros a year, an outlay that accounts for almost 9% of the total expenditure of Basque households. Specifically, in the region, each person spends an average of 1359 euros a year on the hotel and catering industry.
This is one of the main conclusions drawn by the latest EITB Data study. Under the title ‘Eating and drinking outside the home: customs, health, economic activity…’, Basque people spend 300 euros more than the national average.
With this data, the Basque Country is ahead of communities such as Madrid, La Rioja and Navarre, which continue the ranking with slightly lower amounts, but above the national average of one thousand euros.
At the bottom of the ranking are the Canary Islands, Castile-La Mancha and Catalonia, with spending of 706, 778 and 825 euros per person, respectively.
On the other hand, the report highlights that in Spain as a whole, 10,656 bars and restaurants have closed since 2012. In the case of the Basque Country, where the sector employs almost 52,500 people, 772 establishments have closed over the last decade.
