Joint condemnation the attack on Fico and call for unity by slovak leaders
Outgoing Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová and her successor, Peter Pellegrini, met this Thursday to jointly condemn the attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. They called on leaders of all political parties to halt the European election campaign in an effort to promote unity and stability in the country.
During a press conference, Caputova emphasized the urgency of acting together, setting aside political differences. To underscore this message, she invited President-elect Pellegrini, an ally of Fico, to meet at the Presidential Palace. This gesture of collaboration aims to convey a message of harmony and contribute to calming the current situation.
Caputova also highlighted that the shooting on Wednesday is not only a “human tragedy” but also constitutes “an attack on democracy.” Local media have extensively reported on the severity of the incident, emphasizing its impact on both Fico’s life and the political climate of the country.
Pellegrini, who will take office in mid-June, called on political leaders and the media to act responsibly to reduce tension and prevent an escalation of confrontation. He insisted that all parties should suspend or at least decrease the intensity of their electoral campaigns for the European elections.
Pellegrini expressed concern that the electoral campaign could degenerate into “confrontation” and a “blame game” between different political factions, something he considers counterproductive in the current context. He stressed that the last thing Slovakia needs at this moment is further division, especially while investigations into the attack are ongoing and Fico’s health condition is stabilizing.
Update of the condition and suspect details of Fico
The latest medical report available this Thursday indicates that the Prime Minister remains in serious but stable condition after being shot several times on the streets of Handlova. Authorities have identified and detained the sole suspect, 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, who has been charged with attempted murder.
This situation has generated a wave of concern in Slovak society, which watches the developments with apprehension. The call by Caputova and Pellegrini to halt the election campaigns is seen as an effort to mitigate the impact of the attack and reinforce national cohesion during this critical time.
