Poland to invest €2.3 Billion in strengthening eastern border
The Government of Poland has unveiled ambitious plans to invest approximately €2.3 billion in enhancing the security of its eastern border from 2024 to 2028. This significant project, referred to as the “Eastern Shield”, aims to fortify a 700-kilometer stretch of the country’s frontier with advanced defense mechanisms.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak Kamysz announced that this extensive investment will fund the construction of fortifications, fences, and state-of-the-art surveillance systems. The primary goal of the Eastern Shield is not only to contain potential threats but also to robustly defend the eastern border of Poland. According to Kosiniak Kamysz, this initiative represents the most substantial strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank since the end of World War II in 1945. He described the project as a strategic operation crucial for both the Polish government and national security.
Kosiniak Kamysz emphasized the necessity of these measures to ensure the safety of the Polish Armed Forces. He highlighted that the implementation of advanced monitoring systems will significantly improve the ability to track movements in the airspace, facilitating early detection of surprise attacks and complicating enemy troop maneuvers. This information was shared during a joint press conference with Army Chief Wieslaw Kukula, where they provided a detailed overview of the project.
“Our actions are aimed at defending and protecting every inch of Polish territory,” Kosiniak Kamysz asserted. He also noted that the security measures will include enhancing the border with Belarus to tackle the issue of illegal immigration. This initiative will run parallel to the broader Eastern Shield project, ensuring a comprehensive approach to national security.
In addition to the Eastern Shield, the Polish government has announced a substantial increase in the defense budget. Last week, Kosiniak Kamysz mentioned that Warsaw has raised its military expenditure to over 118 billion złoty, which is more than €27.5 billion. This significant budget increase reflects Poland’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities in response to evolving regional threats.
