President Zelenski strengthens International ties in Paris amidst D-Day commemorations
President Volodímir Zelenski marked the second day of D-Day commemorations in Paris by attending a significant military honor ceremony, reflecting Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to fortify international support amidst the war with Russia.
President Zelenski was officially welcomed by French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu at the historic Invalides monument, the site of Napoleon’s tomb. This ceremony underscored the deep historical ties and contemporary solidarity between France and Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader is scheduled to visit the Nexter arms manufacturer in Versailles. Nexter is known for producing the Caesar self-propelled howitzers, a crucial asset that France has been supplying to Ukraine’s armed forces. This visit highlights the strategic military cooperation between the two nations.
Later in d-day, President Zelenski will engage with key French officials, including a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. This will be followed by a significant speech to the National Assembly, aimed at reinforcing the bilateral ties and garnering further support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Meeting with President Biden
Amidst escalating conflicts, President Zelenski is also scheduled to meet with US President Joe Biden. This meeting comes at a critical time as Kyiv’s forces face intense battles, reminiscent of the early weeks of the war. The US, Ukraine’s primary supporter, had recently experienced delays in military aid due to Congressional hold-ups. However, in April, President Biden signed a substantial $61 billion (€56bn) military aid package into law. This week, an additional $225 million (€208m) in military supplies was announced, including munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, mortar systems, and various artillery rounds.
President Zelenski’s international trips are strategically aimed at keeping Ukraine’s situation in the global spotlight. By securing more military assistance and solidifying long-term Western alliances, Ukraine seeks to strengthen its position against Russian aggression.
Ukrainian officials warn of potentially difficult months ahead as the country braces for a challenging summer. These international engagements are crucial for maintaining the momentum of support and ensuring that Ukraine remains equipped to handle ongoing and future threats.
