The Socialist Party (PS) of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has won the legislative elections with more than 52 percent of the vote, with over 93 percent of the ballots counted, securing the politician a historic fourth term leading the Balkan country.
The second most voted party, according to the Albanian Central Election Commission (CEC), was the Alliance for a Great Albania —led by the Democratic Party (PD)— which received 34.4 percent of the vote.
They were followed by the Albanian Initiative Coalition, with 3.5 percent; the Social Democratic Party (PSD), with 3.47 percent; and the Opportunity Party, with 2.95 percent.
Rama has been in office since 2013 and has made Albania’s accession to the European Union (EU) his flagship project. He is also considered one of the United States’ main allies in the Balkans today. His main rival in the elections was the conservative PD, led by Sali Berisha, Albania’s first president after the fall of communism and prime minister from 2005 to 2013.
