The Hungarian government has applauded the lifting of sanctions imposed by Joe Biden’s administration on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff, Antal Rogán, calling it “a clear sign that the winds have changed in Washington” with Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Rogán had been sanctioned shortly before the end of Biden’s term in what Orbán’s government considered a “political vendetta” by authorities “frustrated” by their electoral defeat last November.
The decision had led to the freezing of all Rogán’s assets in the United States and restricted business operations for companies in which he holds a stake of 50% or more.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that the reversal of the measure “confirms a shift in U.S. policy with President Trump’s return,” adding that in Hungary’s case, it marks the end of “unjust actions.”
Indeed, Orbán has long boasted of his good relationship with the current occupant of the White House, whom he sees as a political role model on key issues.
