The German government has decided to maintain border controls at least until June of next year
It has been many years since Angela Merkel’s Germany opened its doors to the Third World. But the consequences are now clearly visible and severe. So much so that the left-wing coalition government led by Olaf Scholz has decided to take action at the country’s borders.
The plan is to keep border controls in place until the number of illegal entries into the country is significantly reduced. This was announced by Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser. She held a meeting with the head of the Federal Police, Dieter Romann, in Rostock. “I am not willing to accept these numbers,” Faeser stated, referring to the figures of illegal entries.
The minister expressed to the Süddeutsche Zeitung that only a handful of countries are bearing the majority of the migration burden. Now, it does no longer seem to be the “gift” it was touted as just a few years ago.
A record influx of immigrants in 2023
Faeser also confirmed that existing controls at the borders with Poland, Czechia, Austria, and Switzerland will remain in place. This, until the European Common Asylum System, approved in the spring, is fully implemented. However, this process will take several more months. German border controls are expected to remain in place until at least June of next year.
In 2023, a record influx of nearly 128,000 illegal immigrants was recorded, but this year the numbers have decreased: so far, 53,000 illegal entries have been recorded, representing a 16% decrease compared to the same period last year. German authorities attribute this decline in part to the resumption of border controls.
The Federal Police have reported that most illegal entries occur through Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland.
