Hungarian authorities have criticized the lack of support from the European Union for the protection of their borders.
“If Brussels wants immigrants, they will have them. We will provide them with a one-way ticket to Brussels,” stated Hungary’s Minister of the Interior, Gergely Gulyás, during a press conference where he demanded that the European Union allow the Hungarian government to curb illegal entries into its territory.
Gulyás emphasized that protecting the Schengen area borders is vital for Europe as a whole, but that Hungary has not received the necessary support from the EU to implement these security measures, “unlike other states,” which is why Budapest is now considering possible responses.
Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has already criticized the Migration and Asylum Pact, calling it “another nail in the coffin” of the EU, lamenting that the bloc’s “unity is dead” and that “secure borders no longer exist.” He also asserted that Hungary “will never yield to the massive migration frenzy.” The Pact includes fines for states that refuse to accept immigrants.
