Attack in Mannheim: Clear evidence of Islamist motivation
German authorities have confirmed the existence of “clear evidence” of an Islamist motivation in the recent knife attack in the city of Mannheim. This tragic event, which occurred last week, resulted in the death of a police officer and left five others injured.
German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann stated that “there is now clear evidence of an Islamist motivation in the crime in Mannheim.” The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation of the case. Buschmann emphasized that “Islam has a place in Germany, but Islamism does not. It is a deadly fanatic act,” through a statement on his social media account on X.
The incident took place in Mannheim’s market square during an event organized by the anti-Islamist movement Pax Europa. The attacker, a 25-year-old man of Afghan origin who arrived in Germany ten years ago, repeatedly stabbed a police officer. Following the attack, the assailant was shot by another police officer present at the scene. Among the injured is Michael Sturzenberger, a board member of Pax Europa.
Reactions and consequences
Buschmann thanked the “brave individuals” who quickly intervened to stop the attacker and protect others. He also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased officer. The minister emphasized the importance of “an independent judiciary to impose a just punishment for this cruel act” and highlighted that preventing and prosecuting such barbaric acts must be the top priority for German security forces and the judicial system.
Pax Europa describes itself as a “human rights organization” dedicated to educating the public about the nature and objectives of political Islam. The group has been actively critical of Islamism and has organized various events to promote its views.
This attack in Mannheim highlights the danger posed by religious fanaticism, principally the Islamist, and underscores the need for constant vigilance and a swift response by authorities to prevent acts of violence motivated by ideological extremism.
